If you use Sage 200 with the Sicon Document Automation software, there is an upcoming Microsoft change that you need to be aware of.
β
Microsoft is retiring Exchange Web Services, usually referred to as EWS, in Exchange Online. From 1 October 2026, EWS will start to be disabled by default, ahead of its permanent retirement from 1 April 2027.
β
Sage 200 itself isn't the issue. However, some popular Sage 200 add ons use EWS to connect to Microsoft 365 and Exchange Online. If you're running one of the affected versions, some email functionality could stop working unless the software is updated. The good news is that there is still time to check and get everything sorted.
β
EWS is a Microsoft technology that applications have traditionally used to communicate with Exchange. For Sage 200 users, you may never have heard of it, and there is no particular reason why you should have!
It sits behind the scenes and can be used by other software to interact with your Microsoft 365 mailbox. Microsoft is now retiring EWS in Exchange Online, which means software that still relies on it needs to move to a supported alternative.

If you aren't sure if you are affected, get in contact and we can help but we will be in contact with you if you are affected.
β
The main concern is email functionality. For example, if an application currently relies on EWS to send emails through Exchange Online, that functionality may stop working when EWS is disabled. With Sicon Document Automation, EWS can also be used for the Exchange integration that allows invoices received into a mailbox to flow directly into Document Automation for processing.
β
It doesn't necessarily mean the entire product will suddenly stop working.
β
But losing an automated email or document process that your finance team relies on every day isn't something you want to discover on a busy Monday morning!
β
No. This isn't a general Sage 200 update that every customer needs to install. You need to establish :
β
β Whether you use an affected add on
β Which version you are currently running
β Whether it connects to Exchange Online
β Whether a patch, compatibility update, service pack or upgrade is required
β
If you don't use any software that relies on EWS, there may be nothing for you to do.
β
If you're a Sage 200 customer and use Sicon Document Automation or another add on that sends or receives email through Microsoft 365, get in touch with us. We can help you establish what you're currently running, whether the EWS retirement affects you and what, if anything, needs updating.
β
If you're not sure what version you've got, that's fine too. Just ask us and we'll help you check π
